Violeta Galan is a designer and creator of furniture and objects using the exquisite craft of straw marquetry, the studio is located in London and Bucharest.
With the launching of Violeta's first collection at London Design Festival in 2013, the art and craft of straw marquetry made a revival into the contemporary world of interior design. Until then, little to nothing was known about this almost forgotten craft. Only a handful of skilled craftsmen used it, mostly for restoration and doing some work in the line of Jean-Michel Frank and Andre Groult - french designers of Art Deco period who used straw marquetry as one of the finest finishes.
The fascination with straws and their intricate quality of capturing and reflecting the light, led Violeta to a new path in life. With a background of civil engineering and a keen eye on pattern and color, geometry is a natural language for Violeta to express creatively. Some of her pieces are interlaced with bold and geometric symbols resulting in hypnotic patterns, and some are telling intricate stories emerging from a more elaborate straw marquetry design. She draws inspiration from art, music, architecture and nature.
Violeta loves creating limited editions and one-off pieces, collaborating with artisans and some of the finest cabinet makers. Her work is commissioned by private individuals as well as interior designers and architects who appreciate her exquisite craftsmanship and expertise in designing with straws.
Her creations have been featured in various world magazines and are part of the most luxurious and extravagant interior homes.
Violeta's work has been exhibited at London Design Week, Celebration of Craftsmanship and Design, Chelthenham, UK.
